Meanderings, Tips & Tricks

  • Question of the month:  "How do you figure correct dilution for an aromatherapy massage blend?"

    To make and Aromatherapy Massage Blend with essential oils, measure out the amount of carrier oil (like jojoba or grapeseed) that you plan to use and then add the appropriate amount of essential oil to achieve the disired dilution.
    For most applications to the skin, the proper dilution would be 2.5%. So, for 10 ml. of carrier oil (1/3 oz.), you would add .25ml (about 2 drops) of essential oils.
    1 ml = approximately 25 drops (depending on viscosity of the oil and size of the dropper). Drops per ml can vary as much as from 20 to 30.
    As a rule, it is often easier to convert oz. to ml. when figuring dilutions. Examples: 1/3oz=10ml; 1/2oz=15ml; 1oz=30ml.
    Note: Do not use the type dropper that you often find in tincture bottles with the black rubber top. Essential Oils can cause rapid deterioration of the rubber even if the oils do not touch it.
    Use only dropper tops (like the dropper inserts in most essential oil bottles) or pipettes (plastic or glass). I prefer using disposible pipettes.
